Yellow Jackets Rally Late to Sting Cougars 4-3
Game one of the three game weekend series against Cedarville University took place Friday evening at Jack Russell Stadium. The Cougars held a 3-1 lead from the bottom of the second until the top of the ninth, when the Yellow Jackets plated three runs to take a 4-3 lead, which resulted in the final score.
Cedarville opened the scoring in the top of the first as center fielder Cam McWilliams scored an on unassisted putout by Cougars first baseman Joel Felten off the bat of David Lenhardt, who collected the RBI on the play.
The Cougars responded in the bottom of the second inning by scoring three runs on three hits and a walk. Freshman Matt Schaefer hit a one out single and was followed by fellow freshman Tim Reidy who hit a single as well. Freshman Gabriel Gali was walked to load the bases. Then, freshman Nick Abbruzzese laced a line drive just past the Yellow Jacket's shortstop, scoring Schaefer to tie the game at 1-1. Clearwater plated two more runs in the inning after freshman Nathan Stanley reached on a throwing error, which allowed T. Reidy and Gali to both score, giving the Cougars a 3-1 advantage.
Junior Will Kirby caught his groove and left the game with a 3-1 lead. Kirby lasted six innings, allowed one earned run, scattered three base hits, issued three walks, and struck out nine. Senior Kyle Baitz and freshman Michael Calabrese threw two combined innings and didn't allow a run.
The Yellow Jackets found themselves down to their last two outs with no runners on base, and trailing 3-1. After two walks with one out, left fielder Dan Larkin hit an RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-2. After another walk to load the bases, Lenhardt hit an RBI single that moved each base runner up a base, and tied the game at 3-3. CU's shortstop Sam Summerlin came through with an RBI single, giving the Yellow Jackets a 4-3 lead. The next two Yellow Jackets were retired on strikes, leaving the bases loaded.
The Cougars stranded one runner on base in the ninth, falling 4-3.
Sophomore Emmanuel Chmielewski (0-1) took the loss for Clearwater throwing one inning, allowing three earned runs, three hits, three walks, and striking out two.
Jordan Adams picked up the win for Cedarville, throwing 1 2/3 innings, scattering two hits, and not allowing a run. He also had one strikeout.
Senior Joel Felten led the Cougars offensively going 3-5. Stanley led the maroon and black with two RBI's.
The Cougars are now 4-9 and Cedarville improves to 3-2 on their young season. These two teams will be back in action on Saturday afternoon at Jack Russell Stadium for a doubleheader slated to start at 1:00pm.
