The Comeback Cougars Strike Again

Looking for their second South Region victory in as many days, the Lady Cougars traveled to Jacksonville, FL to take on the Eagles of Trinity Baptist College. In their previous meeting, the Cougars fell 70-79 at home.

In the first half, both teams struggled to find a rhythm with the Eagles of Trinity Baptist holding the advantage. Had it not been for the Cougars 13 for 20 1st half effort from the free-throw line, they would have been in serious trouble as they shot just 6 for 28 (21.4%) from the field. Yet, their defensive effort kept the game close as they went into the locker room down 25-28.

In the second half, the Eagles came out firing as they stretched their lead to 12 within the first five minutes of the half. But, anyone who has followed this season knows that the Cougars were in no way out of the game at that point. Thanks to hot second half shooting (46.9%), the Cougars would reclaim the lead with just under 5 minutes remaining. The teams would then exchange blows until the game was tied at 60 with 18.6 remaining.

After a Cougars timeout, the ball found the hands of Naomi Reed who would score her only two points of the game on a 15-foot jumper to give the Cougars a 62-60 advantage with 6.2 seconds remaining. Following a Trinity Baptist timeout, the Eagles' last second attempt would rim out, giving the Cougars the 62-60 victory over Trinity Baptist and moving them to 3-2 in the South Region.

For the Cougars, Hallie Linville led all scorers with 21 points. Tori Hale added 15 points, 6 assists, and 8 rebounds. Kenya Joseph, for her part, pulled down 15 rebounds to go along with 8 points of her own.

Next, the Cougars travel to Temple Terrace, FL to face the Falcons of Florida College. The rematch is set to tip on Thursday at 7:00 PM.
