The Cougars lose a heartbreaker in overtime


It was a big stage for a big game as nearly 3000 watched a great South Region basketball game on Saturday night. The Eagles of Pensacola Christian jumped out to the early lead as the Cougars had difficulty scoring. Pensacola took an early 15 point lead with a 30-15 score. Clearwater finally found their range with Eddie Moralobo and Erik McRae hitting two three pointers each. The Cougars cut the deficit to 2, but the Eagles scored just before the break to make the halftime score 41-45. In the second half the Cougars continued to play well and eventually took held a 9 point lead, but the Eagles would narrow that gap, and tie the game late. Clearwater had the ball with 4 seconds to go and the score tied, but could not get the last shot to fall. The overtime period was more of the same with the Cougars taking a small lead, but the Eagles kept answering. Clearwater had two shots on their last possession, but both of them missed the mark. The 87-90 loss brings the Cougars South region record to 4-3, with 5 games left to play.
Clearwater was led in scoring by Mike Key with 25 points, 19 of those in the second half. For the second game in a row Devin Paularinne scored 20 points, and Eddie Moralobo increased his career high by 1 putting up 18. Erik McRae was very generous handing out 13 assists, while Mike Key grabbed a season high 12 rebounds. McRae also got in on teh rebounding with his own season high of 9.
