Lady Cougars Grab First Region Win

In only their second region matchup of the season, the Lady Cougars faced off against the Eagles of Toccoa Falls College. The Cougars were looking to rebound from a loss to Bob Jones University the previous night, where Toccoa Falls entered the game coming off of an overtime win against Columbia International 7 days earlier.

For the first three minutes, neither team could get anything going until Tori Hale put the Cougars up 2-0. However, Toccoa would respond with a 10-0 to grab the 10-2 lead. Throughout the first half, the Lady Cougars would cut the lead to 2, but due to shooting only 8-37 (21.6%) from the field, they could not overtake the Eagles and went into the half down 22-27.

In the second half, the Lady Cougars’ pressure defense would force the Eagles into tough shots and 12 second-half turnovers that led to transition opportunities for the Cougars. While the shooting from the field increased only slightly, the transition opportunities turned into free-throw opportunities, and the Cougars were outstanding from the free throw line, going 15-19 (78.9%) on the evening. When the final buzzer sounded, the Lady Cougars had claimed a 60-54 victory over the Eagles. With the win, the Lady Cougars are now 1-1 in the South Region.

“It’s always tough to win on the road, especially a region game. So, we are pleased to come away with a win.” Coach Wilson said of the game. “You have to give Coach Swinney and Toccoa credit.

They were well prepared for us, but we have to do a better job of executing early in games. Nevertheless, our team really did a nice job of knocking down free throws on offense and keeping them out of rhythm with our defense to get the win.”

Hallie Linville led all scorers with 18 points. Hanna Glaze added 12 points, and Tori Hale recorded a double-double scoring 10 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.

The Lady Cougars return to their home court on Tuesday, February 4 as they take on Webber International University’s JV squad at 7:00 PM.
