Cougars Drop Region Opener
After an exciting OT victory over Florida College, the Lady Cougars welcomed Trinity Baptist College to campus for the Cougars’ first South Region match up. Trinity Baptist was coming in with a record of 3-9 including 2-2 within the region.
Hanna Glaze got the Cougars out front 2-0 on two free throws to start the game. For the remainder of the first half, the teams would exchange the lead back and forth as every time the Cougars would make a run to take the lead, the Eagles would come storming back in transition. At halftime the Cougars trailed 38-37.
In the second half, the score would stay close, but the Eagles would hold control until the Cougars took the lead with 11:38 remaining in the game. However, with 8:43 remaining, the Eagles would take the lead right back with a 55-56 lead over the Cougars. Yet, with 6:47 remaining, the Lady Cougars would take a 60-58 lead behind a Liz Jenkins 3 point basket. But the Eagles just wouldn’t quit as they took a 65-66 lead with 3:34 remaining that they would not relinquish. While the Cougars were able to keep it to within one possession for much of the remainder, they were never able to regain the lead as they fell 70-79 to fall to 2-9 on the season and 0-1 in the South Region.
Coach Wilson had this to say about the game, “We just did not do a good job in transition defense. That poor transition defense led to 54 points in the paint for them. That’s unacceptable. We did a lot of things well, though. Our offense is coming along, but we have got to defend better if we are going to win in this region.”
Coach Wilson's comments were proven in the numbers as Trinity Baptist's offensive numbers were among the best of their season - 44.2% FG, 22 Assists.
Hallie Linville and Tori Hale led the Cougars with 23 and 21 points respectively. Liz Jenkins added 10. Myeasha Williams led all scorers with 25 for the Eagles.
Due to cancellations by Piedmont International University, the Lady Cougars will not return to action until January 31 when they travel to Bob Jones University.
