Cougars Burned Again

Coming off a tough loss to Bob Jones, the Lady Cougars were looking to rebound against Southeastern University of the Sun Conference. The Fire were coming off of a dominating win over Florida Memorial University.

For the first 10 minutes, the game settled into a slow-paced, sloppy game marked by turnovers and poor shooting for both teams with the Fire leading 11-15. After a timeout, the Fire made a few defensive changes and increased the pace of the game going on a 12-0 run over the next 4 minutes and 27-12 over the remainder of the half to go into halftime with the Cougars trailing 23-42.

In the second half, Southeastern picked up right where they left off as they would outscore the Cougars 25-7 over the first 15 minutes of the second half. Over the final five minutes of play, however, the Lady Cougars showed more like the team they knew they could be as they outscored the Fire 19-9 over the final five minutes. In the end, the Cougars would fall with a final score of 49-76.

Coach Wilson had this to say, “We haven’t really seen much zone defense this year, and for 35 minutes, it really showed. Southeastern is long and athletic, and they really gave us fits for most of the game. I think we got it figured out in the last 5 minutes. Now, we’ve seen it. So, we should be able to build on that last 5 minutes as we move through the rest of the season.”

Hallie Linville and Liz Jenkins led the Cougars with 15 points and 13 points respectively.

The Lady Cougars make a quick turnaround as they return to action on Thursday, at home against the Falcons of Florida College. That game will start at 5:00.
