Lady Cougars Drop Home Opener
CLEARWATER, FL -- After opening the season with three road games, the Lady Cougars were looking forward to the first home game of the season. A good crowd was on hand to see the Lady Cougars battle the Seahawks from Northwood University.
From the opening tip, the Lady Cougars looked like a team that was happy to be home as Tori Hale would secure the tip and find Ashleigh Diaz for the easy layup. For the first portion of the first half, the Lady Cougars were able to hang tough, but the depth and size of Northwood would allow the Seahawks to pull away to a 15 point lead with 1:41 remaining in the half, but the Cougars would hit a free throw toward the end of the half to leave the halftime score at 30-44.
“There was much to be pleased about our first half and much to learn from.” Coach Wilson commented about the half. “Our offense looked as good as it has all season, but, on the defensive end, we really didn’t adjust to their dribble penetration. Overall, I was pleased with our effort against a good opponent.”
In the second half, the game would go back and forth, but the closest the Lady Cougars could get was 47-59 with 11:56 to go in the game. From that point, the Seahawks’ depth would outrun the Cougars as they would outscore the Cougars 29-8 over the final 12 minutes. For the Seahawks, one player played 27 minutes while four Cougars players played 34 or more minutes.
The telling stats of the night were Northwood's points in the paint (52), Northwood's 2nd chance poings (24), and Clearwater's 14 assists on 16 made baskets.
For his final comments, Coach Wilson had this to say of the Lady Cougars’ effort, “I was very pleased overall. Northwood is a very good team that will have success in the Sun Conference. But, I thought we played our best overall game of the season. We just have to continue to get into better shape and eliminate some of the unforced errors.”
Three Lady Cougars scored in double figures. Hanna Glaze had an outstanding night for the Cougars, scoring 15 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. Hallie Linville, for her part, scored 16 points of her own. Tori Hale scored 12 points to go along with 6 rebounds and 3 assists.
The Lady Cougars return to the court for the final two games of 2013 in Georgia. On Friday, December 13, they will take on Brenau University in Gainesville, GA. Then, on Saturday, December 14, they will face Truett-McConnell College in Cleveland, GA.
