Lady Cougars Burned at Southeastern

LAKELAND, FL -- After a 12-day break, the Lady Cougars took to the court against the Fire of Southeastern University. The Fire were coming off of a definitive victory over Trinity Baptist, and the Cougars were looking for their first victory of the season.

Position-for-position, the Lady Cougars were outsized by the Fire, but were able to fight hard in the first half and keep the game close. Aggressive defense and timely scoring, including a late first half run, allowed the Lady Cougars to trail by just 11 going into halftime with the score at 22-33.

“I was very pleased with our defensive effort in the first half,” said Coach Wilson of the first half. “We were able to put some pressure on the perimeter and did a nice job of limiting their transition opportunities.”

Unfortunately for the Cougars, the second half would be significantly different. The Fire turned up the defensive pressure in the second half and opened with an 18-3 run to start the half and squelch any hopes of a comeback. The Lady Cougars fought hard and created several open looks, but they were unable to convert even the open looks and shot only 13.8% from the field in the half.

Coach Wilson had this to say of the second half. “You have to give Southeastern a lot of credit. They really turned up the defensive pressure in the second half, and it really affected us. This is a process for us. There were a lot of things done well over the course of the game, but we have to continue to learn how to compete for 40 minutes.”

For Southeastern, Emma Loucks led all scorers with 18 points. Rachel Turner and Hannah Demarest added 11 and 10 respectively.

Hallie Linville led the Lady Cougars with 12 points and 7 rebounds, and Ashleigh Diaz added 8 points to go along with 10 rebounds.

The Lady Cougars will return to action on Saturday, December 7, in their first home game against Northwood University. Game time is set for 3:00 PM.
