Lady Cougars Drop Another One

AVE MARIA, FL - Coming off of a loss to Warner University, the Lady Cougars were set to take on the 2013 Sun Conference regular season and tournament runner up, Ave Maria University. The Gyrenes were coming off of two losses to NCAA II opponents, Palm Beach Atlantic University and Flagler College.

From the opening tip, the Gyrenes asserted themselves, using their superior size and experience to create interior scoring opportunities. The Lady Cougars attempted to make adjustments to counter the Ave Maria interior game, and the Gyrenes found looks on the perimeter, knocking down six threes in the first half. The Lady Cougars, for their part, struggled to score in the first half, going 6-24 from the field while their counterparts shot a blistering 55.3% from the field including 6/17 from beyond the arc. As a result, the Cougars trailed 19-60 going into the half.

In the second half, the Lady Cougars were able to be more effective offensively and defensively. As a result the half was played more evenly at 31-35. Yet, the damage had already been done in the first half leading to a final score of 50-95.

Coach Wilson had this to say of the game, “We knew that Ave Maria would be a very good team. They have been competing for and winning championships for several years, and they are full of juniors and seniors who have been part of those championships. For us, it was about making sure we continue to improve. We have done that in each half so far. For such a young team, that is as important as anything.”

For the Lady Cougars, Ashleigh Diaz scored 11 points and Tori Hale added 10 to go with 5 rebounds.

With the loss, the Lady Cougars are now 0-2. The team will take a break for the Thanksgiving holiday before hitting the road as they return to action against another NAIA Sun Conference opponent, Southeastern University on December 5. Game time is set for 7 PM.
