Lady Cougars Fall in Season Opener
LAKE WALES, FL – The Clearwater Christian College Women’s Basketball team traveled to Lake Wales to open their season against NAIA opponent, Warner University. Coming into the game, the Royals of Warner University were riding a 3-game winning streak and carrying an overall record of 5-1.
Warner opened the scoring with a basket by Eliana Albert. On the next possession, Hallie Linville made the first three-point attempt of her college career, giving Clearwater their only lead of the game at 3-2. From that point, it was all Warner for the remainder of the first half as the Cougars struggled to put the ball in the basket, shooting 6-27 from the field including a dismal 1-10 from behind the arc.
“With so many new, young players, I knew that we might struggle in our first game, but I certainly wasn’t expecting us to struggle quite so much.” Coach Wilson said of the first half.
In the second half, the Cougars came out with new energy and focus. Liz Jenkins really sparked the team as she shot 4-5 from behind the arc for the half. The team played better defensively as well. However, their struggles to manage the defensive glass continued. As a result, the Cougars were out-rebounded 27-55 for the game including surrendering 21 offensive rebounds. Though there was improvement between halves, the Cougars fell 50-86 and open the season 0-1.
Liz Jenkins led the Cougars in scoring with 14. Tori Hale added 12 points to go along with 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Hanna Glaze led the Lady Cougars on the glass with 7 rebounds. For the Royals, Marie Fleuravil led all scorers with 16 points to go along with 14 rebounds.
Of the final, Coach Wilson had this to say, “I was proud of the way our team responded in the second half. It would have been easy to fold up the tent, but they really showed some guts to come out and play the way they did in the second half. We will all learn some things from this game and continue to improve.”
The Lady Cougars return to action on Saturday, as they hit the road again to face another NAIA opponent, Ave Maria University.
