Cougars Lose to CIU after Red Card
Clearwater traveled to Columbia to take on former coach James Whitaker’s CIU Rams Friday. The game started brilliantly for the Cougars, who dominated possession and created several scoring opportunities in the first fifteen minutes of the match. Coach Sam Greeley said “The first half was some of the best soccer we have played in the last two seasons. It was difficult not to get the reward in the final third in the form of some goals.” With eight minutes to go in the first half, Ben Holmes was shown a red card after a controversial handball called in the penalty box. Goalkeeper Garrett Hollenbach came up with a big save on the ensuing penalty kick, but the Cougars were down to ten men for the rest of the match.
After continuing to battle in a scoreless tie well into the second half, the Rams of CIU got the breakthrough and scored what proved to be the game-winner. Clearwater would create a few more chances in the game with ten men, but couldn’t net an equalizer. Columbia would tack on four more to finish the game 5-0. The Cougars will be in action again tomorrow at Point University with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
