Clearwater Eliminated From NCCAA DII College World Series After Loss to Florida Christian College
After Florida Christian College defeated Cairn University 15-2, they advanced to face Clearwater in the semi final game of the loser's bracket. Coming into the game, each team was two wins away from the championship series.
The game was moved up to 12:00pm from the original start time of 4:30pm, due to a rain storm that was going to move through the Mason, Ohio area.
The rain started to come down heavily in the top of the second inning, as Cougars starting pitcher Stephen Martin induced an inning ending 6-4 fielder's choice. Clearwater was preparing to bat in the bottom of the inning until a lightning strike appeared in the sky, and the game was halted.
After a seven hour rain delay, the game resumed at 7:30pm. In the bottom of the third, with the score tied at 0-0, junior David Edwards hit an RBI single scoring junior Jon Rivera who led off the inning with a single.
Martin kept the Suns offense silent through 4 1/3 innings, but a one out walk in the fifth sparked FCC's bats. Shortstop Mark Vidal hit an RBI double to tie the game at 1-1, followed by an RBI single from second baseman Andres Cancio to take a 2-1 lead. The last hitter Martin faced was Erick Figueroa, who walked. Junior Kyle Baitz came in relief hoping for a double play ball to end the inning, and got just that, but an error was made, and the inning continued. The Suns ended up scoring four runs in the inning, taking a 4-1 lead.
With a 4-1 lead, the Suns led off the seventh inning by reaching base on the Cougars third of four errors in the game. With one out and two runners on, Ramon Cedeno hit a three run home run to extend the Suns lead to 7-1, giving FCC some insurance runs. Florida Christian College plated four more runs in the seventh inning, making it 11-1.
CCC couldn't muster anything together offensively, only collecting six hits but were never retired in order after the rain delay.
Martin (5-9) took the loss, throwing 4 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and four walks, while striking out two. He yielded four runs, three of which were earned.
Tyler Cornelius picked up the win for FCC, lasting 5 1/3 innings, surrendering just one run and striking out three.
With the 11-1 loss, Clearwater has been eliminated from the NCCAA DII College World Series, and have placed fourth. The Cougars finish the season 14-36, and a solid run at a national championship.
Freshman shortstop Jake Reidy was named as an NCCAA DII Second Team All-American earlier this week.
