Clearwater Wins World Series Opener 2-0 Behind Martin's Performance
(5/8/13) On Wednesday afternoon, the #4 seed Cougars opened up the NCCAA DII College World Series against #5 seed Arlington Baptist College (Texas). The Patriots won the Southwest Regional Championship to advance to the World Series.
Clearwater sent freshman Stephen Martin to the mound in the series opener. Martin responded by throwing a complete game shut out and scattered four hits over seven innings. He struck out five, walked one, and faced the minimum in three different innings. He also went 1-2 at the plate.
The Cougars scored first in the contest, which came in the third inning after junior outfielder David Edwards hit a two out, solo home run to take a 1-0 lead. Edwards finished 2-2, with a walk, RBI, and a run scored.
Clearwater added another run in the fourth after junior third baseman Joel Felten laid down a bunt for a hit, and advanced to second on a throwing error. He scored on a RBI single off the bat of junior Noel Thomas to take a 2-0 advantage.
The two runs proved to be enough for Clearwater, taking the World Series opener 2-0.
Felten finished 2-3, with a run scored and Thomas finished 2-3 with an RBI. Freshman Chris Zweifach had two base knocks that aided in the Cougars hitting attack.
#4 Clearwater will play tonight against conference rival #1 Toccoa Falls College at Prasco Park. The first pitch is slated for 7:45pm.
The winner of tonight's game will advance to the semi-finals.
Notes: Stephen Martin picked up his fifth win, tied for a team high...Martin also collected his first collegiate hit...Edwards hit the first home run of his college career...Felten swiped two bags, and now leads the team with 14 on the year.
