Clearwater Falls to Toccoa Falls in NCCAA DII South Regional Semi-Final

In the second game of the NCCAA DII South Regional Tournament, the Cougars fell to rival Toccoa Falls College, 4-3.

The Cougars sent freshman Wade Irwin (5-5) to the mound against the Eagles, after a successful complete game win against Toccoa on April 13. Toccoa Falls quickly put up four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-0 lead.

Irwin walked one, hit two, and yielded three hits in the first, with the big hit coming from left fielder Will Patrick, who hit a two RBI single to extend their lead to 4-0.

Irwin settled in after the first inning, throwing a complete game, allowing seven hits and five free passes in the loss.

Freshman Chris Zweifach hit a two out, RBI single in the second inning, scoring freshman Caleb Jordan to get the Cougars on the scoreboard.

In the third inning, Clearwater cut the deficit to 4-2 after junior Noel Thomas beat out a potential inning ending double play, allowing junior David Edwards to score.

Still trailing 4-2 in the top of the seventh, Thomas collected his second RBI on a sacrifice fly that scored Edwards, his second scored run of the contest, cutting the Eagles lead to 4-3. With two outs and junior Jefte Velez at second, along with junior Joel Felten at first, Jordan hit a flare to right field. Off the bat it looked like it was going to drop, but the Eagles right fielder Josh Hill, who had a big day defensively, made a diving catch to save the run and the game for Toccoa.

The loss is the second consecutive one run loss to Toccoa Falls. Dylan Charles picked up the win for the Eagles and Zach Breeden earned the save.

The Cougars will now play Florida Christian College tomorrow afternoon at 1:00pm in an elimination game at Osceola County Stadium. The winner will advance to the NCCAA DII South Regional Championship against Toccoa Falls College, and will need to defeat the Eagles twice to secure the championship.
