Cougars End Up On Wrong End After Another Dramatic Finish in Kissimmee
The Cougars and Suns went into the night cap with the second seed for the NCCAA DII South Regional Tournament next weekend on the line. With the season series knotted at 2-2, it was calling for an exciting finish.
Clearwater kept the momentum from game one and took it into the night cap, as freshman Jake Reidy hit an RBI double that scored junior Jefte Velez with one out in the top of the first to take a 1-0 advantage.
Florida Christian tied it up in the bottom of the second, scoring an unearned run, as third baseman Ramon Cedeno scored on an RBI double off the bat of Elim Perritte. Cedeno reached on an error to start the inning.
Starting pitchers Stephen Martin (Clearwater) and Andres Cancio (Florida Christian) kept both lineups in check, as the game stayed tied until the sixth inning. Junior David Edwards led off with a triple, and scored on an RBI single from Velez. Velez finished 3-3 with an RBI and a run scored in the game.
Trailing 2-1 in the sixth with two outs, Suns shortstop Eric Santamaria lifted a ball over the left field wall to tie the game at 2-2. The home run was Santamaria's second of the day, and first of the night cap.
The Suns were set for a dramatic finish after retiring the Cougars in the top of the seventh with no runs against. Pinch hitter Randy Petito reached on an error to start the inning. After missing two sacrifice bunts, the second pinch hitter of the inning, Vince Tome, took control of the at bat and hit a walk off single to pick up the win 3-2.
Freshman Stephen Martin (3-8) received the loss, after throwing six complete innings, and facing one hitter in the seventh. He scattered five hits, struck out two, walked one, and yielded just one earned run. Junior Kyle Baitz, took the ball in the seventh with the winning run at first, and faced just one hitter, which was Vince Tome, who hit the walk off single.
Taylor Cornelius earned the win for the Suns, after throwing a scoreless seventh inning in relief of Cancio.
Edwards and Velez scored a run each for Clearwater.
Clearwater falls to 11-31, and the Suns finish their regular season one game over .500 with a 21-20 record. Florida Christian picked up the season series against Clearwater 3-2 after winning game two on Friday afternoon.
The Cougars will finish out their regular season schedule tomorrow evening as they host St. Pete College for the 2nd Annual Mayor's Cup at Jack Russell Stadium. The first pitch is slated for 6:00pm.
Notes: Velez had a multi hit performance in each game...Martin has allowed just two earned runs over his last thirteen innings of work...Clearwater is 4-4 in their last eight games...Cougars will be the #3 seed for the 2013 NCCAA DII South Regional Tournament.
