Cougars Fall to Suns Friday Night

Florida Christian College traveled to Clearwater on Friday evening for the first of a three game set between the two teams this weekend. At Jack Russell Stadium, the Cougars dropped game one 9-0.

The Suns starting pitcher, Nick Beavers, kept the Cougars bats silent all night, allowing just two hits, no walks, and no runs in a complete game effort. Clearwater grounded out fifteen times in the loss.

Juniors Jefte Velez and Jon Rivera collected the base hits.

In the top of the first, Florida Christian got out to a quick 1-0 lead after Andres Cancio doubled down the right field line, and then scored on a two out error off the bat of Ramon Cedeno. Cedeno finished the game 4-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.

The Suns plated four more runs in the fifth, after Mark Vidal and Andres Cancio both reached on back to back errors with one out. Erick Figueroa, Eric Santamaria, and Casey Elkin all recorded RBI's in the inning.

Cougars starting pitcher Will Kirby (2-7) threw five innings, not allowing an earned run, but received the loss. He struck out two, walked two, and gave up six hits.

Junior Kyle Baitz, who made the 50th appearance of his college career, finished the game on the mound, throwing four innings, allowing two earned, striking out two, and not surrendering a walk.

The Suns put a run across in the eighth, after Baitz hit Mark Vidal with a pitch. Vidal later scored in the inning on a ground out from Cancio, who collected the RBI.

Three more runs were scored in the ninth, with the big hit coming from Casey Elkins, who collected his second and third RBI on the day after hitting a one out single.

Clearwater was put down in order in eight of their nine at bats.

The loss puts Clearwater at 0-3 in the conference, and Florida Christian improves to 2-4 in conference play.

Games two and three are scheduled for a double header tomorrow afternoon at 1:00pm at Jack Russell Stadium.
