Fire Win 6-3 In Non-Conference Matchup
Southeastern University hosted Clearwater Christian College at Ted A. Broer Stadium on a beautiful Tuesday evening. The Fire scored six runs on eleven hits, four free passes, and four Cougars errors winning 6-3.
The Cougars sent six different pitchers to the mound as sophomore Will Kirby, freshman Taylor Hill, and sophomore Kyle Baitz did not give up an earned run in their appearances.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning, sophomore Justin Capela plated freshman Caleb Jordan on an RBI single. Jordan reached on a one out single earlier in the inning.
After Southeastern put across two in the bottom of the third, Clearwater bounced back to tie the game again in the top of the fourth. After a pair of walks were issued to junior Noel Thomas and Jordan to start the inning, freshman Peter Liloia hit an RBI single to center that scored Thomas from third, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Capela followed Liloia with a successful squeeze, collecting his second RBI in as many at bats, and tying the game at 3-3.
Capela finished the day 2-3 with two RBI's.
The Fire's pitching staff shut down the Cougars for the last five innings, as Clearwater went down in order in four of their last five at bats.
Southeastern put a run across in each of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, which was enough for the win.
Freshman Stephen Martin took the loss, and is now 2-5 on the year.
Johnnie Kirkland picked up the win for the Fire, improving their record to 22-19.
Clearwater will now look ahead to this weekend as they host Florida Christian College for a pivotal three game conference series. The first game is scheduled for Friday night at 7:00pm at Jack Russell Stadium.
Notes: Jefte Velez swiped his tenth bag of the year, making it the first time of his career stealing double digit bases in a season...the Cougars left seven runners on base...Jordan threw out his eleventh runner attempting to steal...seventh loss for Clearwater losing by three runs or less this season...Baitz appeared in the 49th game of his career.
