Florida Memorial Sweeps Cougars in Double Header

In the night cap of the double header, the Cougars sent freshman Stephen Martin to the mound.

Martin kept Florida Memorial's lineup in check through four innings, allowing just two hits, and having three 1-2-3 innings. In the top of the fifth, Martin surrendered a pair of runs as Denzel Nickerson and Blake Martinez collected an RBI each, giving the Lions a 2-0 lead.

After two quick outs in the sixth on pop ups, Florida Memorial exploded for five consecutive hits and scored four runs in the inning, extending their lead to 6-0.

Martin was relieved after throwing six innings, allowing five earned runs, ten base hits, and two free passes. Martin took the loss and is now 2-4 on the year.

The Cougars lone run of the day came in the sixth inning, after sophomore Justin Capela, who was facing his former team, hit a double to lead off the inning, and eventually scored on a base hit by junior David Edwards.

Junior Jefte Velez went 2-3, leading Clearwater offensively.

The Cougars fall to 6-24, and the Lions are now 7-26.

Clearwater will look ahead to a pair of spring break games on Monday and Tuesday before they head home for Easter weekend. They will play on Monday at Ave Maria University at 3:00pm followed by a match up with Freed-Hardeman University on Tuesday afternoon at 2:00pm at Southeastern University.

Notes: Edwards made his first defensive start since an ACL injury last August and is carrying a four game hitting streak...Florida Memorial scored all ten runs in their last three innings...Felten made his first start at third base this season and collected two assists and one putout.
