Tigers Five Run Fourth Inning Enough for Win
Olivet Nazarene and Clearwater faced off for round two of the weekend on Saturday afternoon, after Olivet took the win Friday night in high scoring, 16-9 victory.
At Ted A. Broer Staidum on Southeastern University's campus, Olivet jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, as Matt Davenport, the Tigers right fielder hit a single that scored both Dan Schneider and Ryan Kern, off starting pitcher Wade Irwin.
In the bottom of the second, junior Noel Thomas singled followed by freshman Caleb Jordan's double, putting runners at second and third with one out. Freshman Peter Liloia IV, who started his second game of the day as the backstop for the Cougars, hit a hard line drive for a single that scored both Thomas and Jordan, taking the lead 2-1. Starting pitcher Ryan Archer, who threw four innings for Olivet, got freshman Chris Zweifach to strikeout looking to end the Cougars second inning.
Heading into the bottom of the third with a 2-1 margin, Clearwater put together another productive inning at the plate. Junior Jefte Velez led off the inning with a walk, stole second, and then advanced to third on a single off the bat of junior David Edwards. Freshman Jake Reidy was hit by a pitch, to load the bases with no outs. Right fielder Joel Felten bounced a ground ball to second baseman Nick Jones, that scored Velez, but took Reidy off the bases on a fielder's choice. Thomas followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Edwards, giving the Cougars a 4-1 lead.
In the next half inning, ONU had a big inning which started after their first two hitters Kevin Lasowski and Josh Altmann were hit by a pitch. Stefan Sauder, who started the game behind the dish for the Tigers, delivered a two RBI double, cutting Clearwater's lead to 4-3. Left fielder Justin Fahy then singled in the tying run, making it a 4-4 game. The last big hit of the inning came off the bat of Dan Schneider, who collected an RBI triple, giving the Tigers a 5-4 lead.
The Cougars couldn't get anything else going offensively, and fell to Olivet 9-4.
Jordan went 2-3 at plate, leading the Cougars offensively.
Irwin (1-3) took the loss, and Ryan Archer (1-0) picked up his first win of the season. Senior Kevin Lasowski picked up his fifth save of the season for Olivet.
