Tigers Best Cougars In High Scoring Affair

Clearwater traveled to Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida for a three game set between Olivet Nazarene University (IL) and Mount Vernon Nazarene University (OH) on Friday and Saturday. Clearwater faced off against Olivet in the first game of the weekend, and fell 16-9.

The Cougars got out to a hot start off Tigers starting pitcher Jonathan Fightmaster, stringing together four base hits to start the game. Junior Jefte Velez led off with a single followed by freshman Caleb Jordan's single of his own. Freshman Jake Reidy followed Jordan with his first of two doubles in the game, that scored Velez, making it a 1-0 game. Junior Joel Felten then knocked in Jordan, with his first of five singles in the game. Reidy scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore Justin Capela, taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. The Cougars stranded two runners in the inning.

After two quick outs in the bottom of the first, the Tigers hit six singles in a row, followed by a Cougars error, and took a 5-3 lead. Olivet swiped five bases in the first inning, and thirteen in the game.

Olivet scored every inning, and collected fifteen hits. Fightmaster settled in nicely, throwing five innings, giving up eight hits, striking out three, and picked up the win.

Clearwater put a run across in the fifth, as Reidy was forced home by a walk with the bases loaded, which cut the Tigers lead to 15-4. In the sixth inning, Jordan singled in Zweifach, who walked to start the inning. Reidy then hit a double, scoring both Velez and Jordan, making it a 16-7 contest. Reidy eventually scored on a passed ball, as did Felten, later in the inning. With runners on first and second with one out, the Cougars next two hitters struck out looking to end the inning.

The Cougars took the loss 16-9, and are now 5-17 on the year.

Clearwater will take on Mt. Vernon Nazarene tomorrow morning at 10:00am at Ted A. Broer Stadium on the campus of Southeastern University. They will complete the weekend with a rematch against Olivet Nazarene University in the afternoon at 3:30pm, also at Southeastern.
