Toccoa Falls Pulls Out Nightcap In Extra Innings

In the second game of the twinbill, it took extra innings to decide the winner between Toccoa Falls and Clearwater.

The Eagles got on top early, after center fielder Justin Key walked to start the game. He scored on a base hit from shortstop Jordan Couillard, and took a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first, freshman catcher Caleb Jordan laced a double into the right center gap to get things going with one out. He advanced to third on a single from junior Joel Felten, and then scored on a passed ball, tying the game 1-1.

Freshman Peter Liloia IV started off the bottom of the second with a walk, and scored on another passed ball during Jordan's second at bat of the game. With a 2-1 lead, the Cougars left the bases loaded as Felten struck out to end the threat.

It didn't take long for Toccoa to answer back as Zack Warner and Will Patrick hit doubles in the following inning, and it was Patrick's that scored Warner to knot the game at 2-2.

Freshman starting pitcher Stephen Martin was relieved in the sixth inning by junior Kyle Baitz. Baitz inherited a runner on first with no outs. The Eagles were able to collect two singles and also reached on a Cougars error, which put them back in the lead 4-2.

Heading into the bottom of the last scheduled inning to play and trailing by a pair of runs, the Cougars looked for a way to even the score. Junior Jefte Velez and Caleb Jordan both reached on errors by the Eagles shortstop. With no outs and runners on first and second, freshman Jake Reidy singled scoring both Velez and Jordan, tying the game at 4-4.

Reidy's single sent the game into extra innings, and in the top of the eighth, Toccoa collected six runs on four hits, two errors, and a free pass, giving them a comfortable 10-4 lead.

The Cougars put together a run in the bottom half after freshman Chris Zweifach singled home junior Jon Rivera, but the Eagles starting pitcher Micah Ellington finished the game and picked up the win, throwing all eight innings, allowing ten hits, and two earned runs as Clearwater stranded eight runners on base.

Baitz (1-1) took the loss throwing three innings, allowing just one earned run of seven surrendered, walking one, and yielding six hits.

Martin (1-3) got the no decision, throwing five innings, giving up two earned runs, and walking three.

The Cougars fall to 0-2 in conference play, and the Eagles jump to 2-0.

These two teams will meet next in Toccoa Falls, Georgia on April 12-13 for a three game series.
