Cougars Lose First Game of Double Header
Northwood University exploded with an eight run fourth inning, which was plenty as the Cougars never answered back.
The Seahawks scored first after designated hitter Hunter Davis connected for a solo home run over the left field fence to start the bottom of the third inning. Cougars starting pitcher Brandon Gonzalez then retired the next three hitters to end the inning, keeping the score at 1-0.
Gonzalez went out for the fourth inning, looking for a quick inning, but the Seahawks were able to put across eight runs on seven hits and three free passes in the inning, creating a 9-0 lead. The big hit came off the bat of Northwood catcher Angel Garcia, who hit a bases clearing triple, scoring three runs. Gonzalez finished the day throwing 3 1/3 innings, surrendering seven hits and seven earned runs, and struck out one.
The Cougars tried to get something going in the top of the fifth, after freshman Peter Liloia started off the inning with a single, followed by another single from junior Noel Thomas. Seahawks starter Patrick Barrington then induced a 6-4-3 double play off the bat of freshman Chris Zweifach, putting Liloia at third base with two outs. Junior Jefte Velez then popped out to end the inning, stranding Liloia.
Barrington picked up the win for Northwood, throwing five innings, scattering five hits, not allowing a run, and striking out four.
The Seahawks were able to put another run across the bottom half of the fifth, ending the game 10-0.
Thomas led the Cougars hitting going 2-2 with a double and a single. Peter Liloia, Jake Reidy, and Justin Capela each had singles of their own.
Notes: Freshman Garrett Johns made his first collegiate appearance on the mound...the Cougars stranded four runners...each hitter in the Seahawks starting lineup collected a base hit and eight of the nine starters scored...Clearwater falls to 0-2 on the year.
