Rollins College Wins Pitcher's Duel
The Cougars traveled to Alfond Stadium in Winter Park, Florida to take on Rollins College in a preseason exhibition match up. The Tars were able to scratch a run across in the bottom of the 2nd inning, which proved to be enough.
In a game that took one hour and forty-eight minutes to complete, it was obvious that the pitcher's were in control from both sides. Freshman Brandon Gonzalez threw 4 innings for the Cougars, throwing just 39 pitches, and allowing one run on an RBI single to Brandon Curson. Freshman Wade Irwin relieved Gonzalez and threw three shutout innings attacking the strike zone, retiring 9 of the 10 hitters he faced. Sophomore Justin Capela finished the game on the mound, after playing shortstop for the first seven innings.
The Tars pitching staff held the Cougars to two hits, keeping the line up off balance. Junior Jefte Velez started off the game with a single that landed behind second base, but were unable to capitalize on the opportunity.
Coach Rebandt said following the game, "I was excited to see our pitching staff pound the zone and our defense make plays. It's still early so we didn't expect our bats to be where we want them to be. Hopefully as our hitters see more live pitching, we will be more productive at the plate."
Clearwater will travel to West Palm Beach next weekend to open up the season with a three game series against Northwood University (NAIA). The Seahawks finished their 2012 campaign with a 24-24 record, and took the series with Clearwater 2-1. The first pitch of the weekend is scheduled for 2:30pm on Friday, February 1.
