Cougars Claim First Win of Season

(11/30/12) After three difficult losses, the Lady Cougars were looking to get on track in the 2012-2013 season as they faced NCCAA Division II South Region opponent Toccoa Falls College at home tonight.

Ten minutes into the first half, it was clear that the lessons from the first few games had paid off as the team raced out to a 23-6 lead. Alyssa Zallie would lead the way with 13 of her game-high 18 points in the first half as the Cougars went into the half with a 37-19 advantage.

In the second half, the Lady Cougars would be sparked by Kim Vilchez who finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds. In addition to Vilchez's rebounding effort, Zallie and Danielle Fressel added 10 rebounds apiece to lead the Cougars to a 58-38 rebounding advantage and a 70-35 win over the Eagles. For scoring, to go along with Zallie and Vilchez, Grace Thomas had 13 points, and Tori Hale added 12 points.

Of his team's effort, Coach Wilson said, "I was really pleased tonight - four players scored in double figures, and everyone bought in to our need to be relentless rebounders. There is plenty to improve on, but I am proud of the progress that this team has made so far."

With the win, the Cougars move to 1-3 on the season and 1-0 in the South Region. They will enjoy this win, but must have a quick turnaround as they travel to Miami, Florida tomorrow to face the Wildcats of Johnson & Wales University at 5:00 p.m.
