St. Pete Wins 1st Mayor's Cup in Pitchers Duel
Clearwater Christian College squared off against St. Pete College at Bright House Stadium on Friday night for the Mayor's Cup. It proved to be a pitchers duel, with the final score of 3-0. The Mayor of Clearwater, George Cretekos, was present as he delivered the ceremonial first pitch.
In a game that lasted just an hour and fifty minutes, both pitchers dominated the opponents inning after inning, getting ahead early in the counts. Cougars starter, freshman Will Kirby, threw 7 2/3 innings, allowing three hits, three walks, and just one earned run. His counterpart, Zach Gordan, picked up the win for St. Pete College throwing a complete game shut out, striking out ten, and giving up three hits.
SPC put three runs across in the first two innings, which was the difference in the game.
Clearwater had a chance to get on top in the first inning, as sophomore David Edwards led off with a walk, and was bunted over to second by junior Chris Caudillo. Edwards was left stranded at third to end the inning, as Gordan struck out freshman Nate Krouse to end the threat.
Kirby gave way to the bullpen in the eighth inning, with two outs and a runner on second. Senior Josh Williams came in and did his job, inducing a fly ball to end the inning.
In the top of the ninth, the Cougars got some offensive momentum going, as senior Zack Weber extended the inning with two outs as he singled up the middle. Krouse reached base on a throwing error, putting runners at second and third with two outs. Pinch hitter, Joel Felten, came into the game roping a line drive right at SPC's third baseman, ending the game.
Edwards, Weber, and freshman Henry Turner combined for the three Cougar hits.
SPC won the 1st Annual Mayor's Cup at Bright House stadium, with a final score of 3-0.
The Cougars drop to 9-29 on the year, and will finish regular season play tomorrow at Pasco-Hernando CC with a double header starting at noon.
