Fire Score Early and Quiet Cougar Bats

Clearwater Christian College traveled to Lakeland on Tuesday evening for their last midweek regular season game. The Cougars looked to even the season series, as the Fire won an extra inning affair on March 27. The Cougars couldn't get anything going offensively, collecting only two hits.

Sophomores Jefte Velez and Barrette Lindsay were the two Cougars that collected base hits. Four others reached base on either walks or hit by pitches, and freshman Nate Krouse reached on an error. Making it easier on the Fire defense, starting pitcher Sergio Pita struck out nine batters, throwing a complete game shut out.

The Fire scored four runs in the bottom of the first, on five base hits and a hit by pitch. Southeastern first baseman Adam Kemp knocked in two RBI's in the second, after back to back hitters were hit by Henry Turner with two outs. The Fire added one more in the third, making it 7-0.

The last six innings of the game remained scoreless, leaving the final score at 7-0.

The Cougars bullpen did a great job picking up starter Henry Turner, who took the loss. Senior Josh Williams and sophomores Kyle Baitz and Luke Brigham combined for five innings of shut out ball, and allowing just two base hits. Williams threw three innings, along with Baitz and Brigham's inning a piece.

The Cougars are scheduled to play Friday night at Bright House Stadium at 6 p.m. for the 1st Annual Mayor's Cup versus St. Petersburg College. Mayor George Cretekos will be at the game and will throw out the first pitch at 5:45 p.m. The Cougars will also be honoring the senior class as a part of the pregame ceremonies beginning at 5:35 p.m. Admission is free. Please come out and support the Cougars for their last time playing in front of the Cougar fans in the 2012 season!
