Suns First Inning Captures Win

(4/13/12) The Cougars traveled to Florida Christian College for the first of a three game series on the weekend. The Suns pounded out ten hits and collected thirteen runs in the first inning, which was enough for the victory in game one.

Relief pitcher Josh Williams came in to start the second inning and quieted the opponent's bats for five innings, allowing just three hits, no free passes, and no runs.

The bats never came around for the Cougars after the 1st inning, when sophomore David Edwards led off with a triple, and scored on a single by junior Chris Caudillo, giving the Cougars a 1-0 lead. They left the bases loaded after Suns starting pitcher Brent Hodge induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

From then on, Hodge settled in throwing a complete game, allowing eight hits, and just one run.

Suns left fielder Erick Figueroa and first baseman Vince Tome each collected two hits and four RBI's in the first inning. Those eight RBI's were a part of the thirteen run inning in the bottom half of the first.

Sophomore Jefte Velez lead the Cougars hitting going 2-3 on the day.

Both teams went scoreless after the first inning, leaving the score at 13-1 to finish the game.

Clearwater starter Will Kirby took the loss, and Hodge picked up the win for the Suns.

These two teams will meet for game two and three of the weekend starting tomorrow at 12 p.m. in Kissimmee. Florida Christian currently leads the season series 2-1.
