Cougars Win Midweek Game at Eckerd

Clearwater won the rubber match game on Monday night versus Eckerd College in a trio of midweek games this season. The Cougars had thirteen hits and were issued twelve free passes on the evening leading to a 12-7 victory.

Freshman pitcher Henry Turner picked up his second win of the year against the Tritons, throwing into the seventh inning, giving up five earned, and striking out one.

The Cougars bats were hot all evening, but an eight run fifth inning was the highlight. In the inning, Clearwater had four hits, and took advantage of six free passes, and a Triton error.

CCC striked first in the first inning after sophomore David Edwards singled, who ended the day 4-4 with a pair of walks, and three runs scored, and eventually scored on senior Zack Weber's RBI single. Weber finished the day 1-4 with two RBI's, and was hit twice by the pitcher, reaching base three times.

Freshman catcher Nate Krouse went 3-6, with a pair of RBI's that came off his base hits in the fifth and seventh inning.

Sophomore Jefte Velez had two singles on the day, and knocked in two runs.

Senior Ethan Barba scored three times, after being hit by the pitcher twice, and getting walked twice.

Junior Chris Caudillo along with sophomores Joel Felten and Eddie Fuentes had an RBI each.

Freshman Manny Chmielewski pitched solid out of the bullpen, coming up with two big strikeouts to shut down the Tritons in the seventh, and turned it over to sophomore Kyle Baitz to finish the game. They combined for three innings, allowing no earned runs, and just one hit.

Eckerd starter Alex Menendez took the loss, throwing 4 2/3 innings, giving up eight runs, which only four were earned.

Clearwater won the season series 2-1, and improve to 8-25 on the year. They will be on the road this weekend with a three game set Friday and Saturday at Florida Christian College. These two teams are 1-1 against each other, with the Cougars outscoring the Suns 7-2.
