Cougars Beat Tritons Behind Turner's Gem
Clearwater traveled to Eckerd College on Tuesday evening for a midweek game, and came out on top winning 3-1. Freshman Henry Turner picked up his first collegiate victory after throwing a complete game, scattering six hits, and allowing just one run.
Turner dominated the Tritons line up keeping them off balance. The Cougars defense also gave him a lot of support, turning three double plays, and didn't make any errors.
The Tritons got their lone run in the sixth after pinch hitter Keegan Oberer hit an RBI single, cutting the lead to 3-1.
The Cougars scored first in the game, coming in the fifth inning, after senior Ethan Barba hit a one out double, which was one of his two hits on the night. He advanced to third after sophomore David Edwards singled, putting runners at the corners. Edwards then stole second, and Barba read the throw to second, and was able to steal home in the process, giving Clearwater a 1-0 lead.
Freshman Nate Krouse led off the sixth inning with a walk, and reached third base after taking two bases on a passed ball. Freshman Manny Chmielewski singled in Krouse, doubling the lead to 2-0. Sophomore Jon Rivera knocked in Chmielewski on a ground ball to second base, extending the score to 3-0.
The Cougars did not hit well with runners on base, leaving ten stranded, but did manage to get enough across.
Barba had a multi hit day, and Edwards and Chmielewski reached base three times each.
The Cougars totaled nine hits on the night, and were able to pull away with the win after receiving quality pitching and defense.
The win evens the season series with Eckerd College at 1-1. Eckerd beat CCC back on February 16th, 4-1. The third game of the season series will take place on Monday, April 9 at Eckerd College.
The Cougars have the weekend off, and will play next Tuesday against Southeastern University at Frank Tack Park at 6pm. This match up will be the last home game for Clearwater this season.
