Eagles Snatch Cougars In Game One
Toccoa Falls catcher Adam Reynolds hit a home run in the top of the eighth inning, giving Toccoa Falls a 5-3 lead. They didn't look back, scoring two more in the ninth taking game one 7-3.
Toccoa scored a run in the first after an error, and then a double off the bat of Eagles third baseman Corey Warner.
They added two more in the third after a bunt single, hit by pitch, a Cougars error, and a sacrifice fly, making it 3-0.
Clearwater got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when sophomore Jefte Velez led off the inning with a single. Senior Ethan Barba then reached on an error, which was followed by sophomore David Edwards single, scoring Velez. Junior Chris Caudillo bunted, advancing both Barba and Edwards. The sacrifice bunt put two runners in scoring position and sophomore Chaz Russo hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Barba from third, cutting the lead to 3-2.
Sophomore Eddie Fuentes scored in the seventh to tie the game after he singled with one out, eventually scoring on an Eagles error. After seven innings, the game was knotted at 3-3.
The tie game set the stage for Reynolds, the Eagles catcher, who hit a home run to left field taking the lead 5-3, knocking in Andrew Thorne, who led off the inning with a walk. The lead off walk was starting pitcher Will Kirby's only walk of the game.
Kirby threw 7 1/3 innings, giving up three earned runs, fanning four, and scattering seven hits.
Toccoa added two more insurance runs in the ninth, taking a 7-3 lead.
CCC didn't get much going offensively as Eagles starting pitcher Jordan Key picked up the win. The Cougars only recorded six hits in the evening, led by Edwards and Velez who had two each.
The Cougars will look to even and win the series tomorrow afternoon with a double header beginning at noon at Frank Tack.
