Cougars Take Game One Friday Night
Clearwater beat Alice Lloyd College in Friday night's game at the Joe DiMaggio Complex 19-6, after pounding out twenty one base hits, and receiving 7 2/3 innings of strong pitching out of freshman Will Kirby. Kirby walked just one hitter, struck out seven, and gave up four earned runs, picking up the win.
Alice Lloyd didn't waste time getting on the board, after leadoff hitter Kevin Smith, hit a home run over the right field wall. They pushed another run across in the first, taking an early 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first, catcher Nate Krouse scored sophomore David Edwards from second, after he led off with a double, cutting the lead to 2-1.
The Eagles scored another in the second, after center fielder Brandon Arnold hit a two out RBI double, extending the lead to 3-1.
Sophomore Jefte Velez came through with an RBI single in the bottom of the second, and Edwards hit a sac fly, both resulting in a run each, which tied the game at 3-3.
In the the top of the third, the Eagles took the lead again, after catcher Devon Pelfrey hit an RBI single, making it 4-3.
Another lead change came in the bottom of the fourth, as the Cougars put two across, making it 5-4. Edwards and senior Zack Weber both hit RBI singles in the inning.
The Cougars extended the lead to 6-4 in the fifth, after Velez hit an RBI double with two outs, scoring sophomore Chaz Russo after walking to lead off the inning.
The Eagles would not go away, as right fielder Jeff Cyrus hit a home run, cutting the lead to 6-5, in the top of the seventh.
Clearwater broke the game open in the bottom half of the seventh, scoring eight runs, on six hits and four free passes, extending the lead to 14-5.
CCC put another five runs across in the bottom of the eighth, on five base hits and two free bases, making it 19-5.
Freshman David Dumas came in to finish the game on the mound, throwing the ninth, giving up one run, but pitching efficiently.
The Cougars outscored the Eagles in the last three innings 13-2, which made the difference in the game.
Edwards finished the day 4-6, scoring four times, and knocking in three runs, leading the Cougars offensively.
Nate Krouse, Joel Felten, Jefte Velez, and Ethan Barba all had three hits on the day. Combined they knocked in ten of the Cougars runs.
Chaz Russo scored three runs, after walking in four of his plate appearances.
Clearwater had five sac flys, two sac bunts, and four successful bunt for hits, making a big difference in the game.
Clearwater will look to win the series tomorrow afternoon as they play Alice Lloyd at Frank Tack Park, with the first pitch at 1 p.m.
