Cougars Defeated at Home Against Webber

Webber International University pounded out nineteen hits in a 17-2 victory at Jack Russell Stadium on Monday night.

The Cougars sent starting pitcher Kyle Leja to the bump in hopes to put a stop to the current losing streak. Leja came out strong retiring the side 1-2-3, with two strikeouts, in the first.

In the Warriors second inning, they put three runs across the plate after four base hits in the inning.

Clearwater fought right back in the bottom half of the second, as designated hitter Eddie Fuentes singled to start the inning. Second baseman Chris Caudillo laid down a bunt to move him to second base. Freshman Nate Krouse then singled putting runners at the corners with one out. Right fielder Henry Turner knocked in Fuentes on a single of his own, cutting the score to 3-1. Krouse scored on a RBI single by sophomore Jon Rivera making the score 3-2. WIU starter Armani Gonzalez induced a ground ball double play off the bat of senior Ethan Barba to the end the threat.

The Cougars didn't put any more runs across for the remainder of the game, and only recorded three more hits.

On the flip side, the Warriors had timely hits scoring four runs in the third, six in the sixth, three in the eighth, and one more in the ninth.

Turner led the Cougars offensively going 2-3 with an RBI.

Leja took the loss going 5 1/3 innings, striking out five, and scattering nine hits.

Gonzalez picked up the win, going five innings, giving up two earned, walking one, and striking out just one.

The Cougars will take the field this weekend against NAIA Florida Memorial University at home, with all the games being played at Jack Russell Stadium. The first pitch Friday night is set for 7 p.m.
