Tritons Top Cougars 4-1
Clearwater had a short road trip this evening as they took on Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida. The Cougars took another loss after getting a quality start out of Freshman Will Kirby.
Kirby took the loss after throwing seven innings, giving up four earned runs, with just one walk, facing thirty-three hitters.
The Tritons got on the board in the first inning after Kirby surrendered back to back hits.
In the Cougars half of the fourth inning, Jefte Velez reached base after Triton third baseman made a throwing error on a ground ball, allowing Velez to get to second on the play. Senior Zack Weber laid down a sacrifice bunt, getting Velez to third with one out, and then sophomore Joel Felten singled him in, tying the game 1-1.
The Cougars had a chance to break it open in the top of the fifth, after catcher Eddie Fuentes singled, and then right fielder Henry Turner hit a double in the gap, placing runners at second and third with one out. Triton starting pitcher Jordan Huchro got of the jam, after striking out Ethan Barba, and then inducing a ground ball from David Edwards on a very close play at first base.
Eckerd took the lead back in the fifth, after getting four base hits, bringing two runs across, making the score 3-1.
They added one more in the sixth inning, after a leadoff double, a sac bunt to get the runner over to third base, and then a sacrifice fly scoring the run, extending the lead to 4-1.
The Cougars never answered, but had another opportunity in the eighth, after Barba singled to leadoff the inning, and then Edwards walked with no outs. Eckerd got out of the jam allowing no runs after two strikeouts and a fly out.
Clearwater was retired in order in the ninth, with two strikeouts and a ground out.
Felten had the lone RBI for the Cougars.
Sophomore Kyle Baitz made his seventh appearance out of the bullpen this year, throwing a scoreless eighth inning.
Clearwater will travel to St. Leo University on Saturday evening for a 6pm start.
