Clearwater Upsets Webber University

For Seniors, Katie Jo Mullens and Amanda Ison, their last home game in the Clearwater gymnasium will be remembered as one of the best games played of their collegiate careers.

NAIA Webber University opened the game with intense defensive pressure to break quickly ahead 15-3. The Cougars persevered and as the team played solid defense they began to answer back, Webber’s lead would not be over taken until the Cougars tied the score with 3 minutes left in the half. At that point the Cougars had the momentum and took advantage to lead at the half 40-34.

During the second half, although the score fluctuated between a six to ten point lead, the Cougars continued to hold the lead until the final minute when Webber brought the score to within 3. Webber’s defensive pressure finally paid off as Webber tied the game with 15 seconds left on the clock. In the final seconds of the game, scoring leader Tori Hale drove to the basket, and although her attempt did not fall, Tina Bechtel got the rebound and put back with 4.5 seconds left on the clock to give the Cougars an 86 – 84 victory.

Tori Hale had a record breaking 37 points and 14 rebounds for the Cougars. Senior Katie Jo Mullens had 18 points. And Justina Bechtel also finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds. The Cougars celebrating one of the first NAIA wins for the women’s basketball program are now 6-9.
