Cougars Finish Regular Season With Big Win

The CCC volleyball team finished their regular season with a big win over Webber International University in front of a huge home crowd on Tuesday night. Although the Warriors are currently second in the NAIA Sunshine State conference with a 19-7 record, the Lady Cougars were not intimidated by the taller and stronger squad. After dropping the first set, CCC rebounded back to take the second set. After dropping the third set 23-25, Clearwater responded with a 25-19 win in set four to force a fifth set. During set five the Cougars fell behind 1-5 but after Coach Denny called a time-out, the team settled down and responded with a run of points to capture the lead at 8-7 when the teams switched sides of the net. The two teams then battled back and forth for every point displaying some outstanding offensive and defensive plays. At the end, the Cougars prevailed and won the set 17-15 taking the match.

Coach Denny was so impressed with her team's effort against a very strong opponent. "To be able to beat a solid NAIA team like Webber here at the end of our regular season is a huge push for our national tournament next week. I was especially pleased with our defensive effort on the night." The Cougars were led defensively by libero, Amanda Ison with 20 digs and setter Sarah Wild with 22 digs. Emma Kile, who was honored on Senior Night, led all hitters with 31 kills for the match followed by Amanda Bucklin with 17 kills and Richelle Bucklin with 11 kills for the night. According to Coach Denny, "Right now we are playing some of our best volleyball of the season with different players stepping in and contributing."

The Cougars begin tournament play next Thursday at noon against West Coast Baptist College at the NCCAA II National Tournament in Kissimmee, FL. Additional information and game times can be found at www.thenccaa.org.
