Cougars Salvage 1-1 Tie with Warner

(11/1/11) Clearwater Christian College salvaged a 1-1 tie with NAIA Sun Conference playoff qualifier Warner University in a tune up for the NCCAA National Tournament. Freshman Dean-Paul Wallace scored with 10 minutes to go in the match off an assist from John Woodhall to tie the score at 1.

In the first half, the match was primarily played in the midfield as neither team was able to create many good opportunities to score. Warner broke through early in the 2nd half as Alex Lebau scored from close range after a miscommunication in the box between the Cougar defender and keeper. The Cougars pushed hard to get the game-tying goal and were rewarded when Wallace slipped behind the Warner defense to beat the keeper and tie the match.

The Clearwater defense, led by Matt Wells and John Moore, played well, limiting the Royals to 5 shots on goal.

Coach Whitaker commented after the match, "This was a great tune-up for us as we prepare for the National Tournament. We were thrilled to be able to play well against an opponent as quality as Warner. I thought our young guys especially played well as we held out several key players that have been nursing injuries. We seem to be peaking at the right time, and I really like our mindset going into Nationals."

The Cougars will next play in the NCCAA DII National Tournament in Kissimmee, Florida on November 9-12. In the first round, Clearwater will face Manhattan Christian College on Wednesday, November 9 at 7:45 p.m.
