Cougars Win 3rd Straight South Region Championship to Advance to Nationals


(10/29/11) Clearwater Christian College won the NCCAA South Region Championship, defeating Point University 1-0 in front of a huge crowd of Cougar supporters at Glen Oaks Park. Dean-Paul Wallace scored the game winning goal for the Cougars to help them advance to the NCCAA National Tournament in Kissimmee, Florida on November 9-12.

The Cougars scored 19 minutes into the 1st half when Wallace scored on a rebound off the Point keeper after Drew Custer managed to get behind the Seahawk defense and crossed the ball into the box. The Cougars continued to create quality scoring opportunities but couldn't capitalize to put the match out of reach. The Cougars held an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal,

The Clearwater defense played well in earning the shutout, led by junior goalkeeper Anthony DeRosse and senior defenders Matt Tewes and Matt Wells.

The South Region Championship was the 3rd straight for the Cougars and will allow them to advance to the NCCAA National Tournament where they will go for their 3rd straight national championship.

The following players earned all region honors:
1st Team All-Region -- Drew Custer, Anthony DeRosse, Matt Tewes, Matt Wells
2nd Team All-Region -- Brian Chidarikire, Mac Hildebrand, Johnathan Moore, Walter Scharf, and James Sikes.
