Cougars Drop Match to Webber on 2 Late Goals

(10/13/11) Clearwater Christian College lost to Webber International University (NAIA) 2-0 on Thursday night, giving up 2 late goals in the final 8 minutes of the match to drop the match to the Warriors.

The Cougars played well throughout the match, frustrating the Webber attack and creating several quality chances to score -- especially on corner kicks and free kick opportunities. Andy Hernandez scored the back breaking goal for the Warriors in the 82nd minute, heading a cross past goalkeeper Anthony DeRosse for the game winner. Minutes later, Javier de la Cruz curled a free kick from just outside the 18 into the upper 90 to seal the win for Webber.

The Cougar defense, led by goalkeeper Anthony DeRosse and center back Matt Wells, played well all night, limiting the scoring opportunities.

Coach Whitaker commented, "I was proud of our team and the effort they put forth tonight against a very good Webber team. We again put ourselves in position to win the match. We've got to keep our focus for the full 90 minutes and do the little things to win these tight matches. The lessons from these matches against good teams should pay dividends when we get to post-season play."

The Cougars will face Florida Southern College (NCAA II) this Saturday, October 15 at 6:30 p.m. This will be the last regular season home match and will be "Senior Night" as we honor our 6 seniors prior to the match.
