Cougars Draw 1-1 with Point
(10/1/11) Clearwater Christian College came very close to earning a huge region win over Point University but were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw in an epic overtime match on Saturday in East Point, Georgia.
The Cougars best chance of the first half came midway through the half when Mac Hildebrand missed wide on an empty net that could have given Clearwater the early lead. Luke McClendon scored first for Point in the 28th minute when the Cougars failed to clear a ball in the box and he found the net to give the Skyhawks the lead.
In the second half, the Cougars pushed hard to even the match and were able to create several great scoring chances. Seth Dempsey nearly scored on a volley but the Skyhawk keeper came up with a great reaction save to push the ball over the goal and preserve the lead. In the closing minutes of regulation, the Cougars had several corners and free kicks and were rewarded with 5 minutes to go when Matt Tewes hammered home the game tying goal off a corner to send the match into overtime.
In overtime, the Cougars continued to keep the pressure up to get the game winning goal but each time the Point defense was up to the challenge. During the first overtime, Walter Scharf's point blank header was saved at the last second by the Point keeper to preserve the tie.
Coach Whitaker had this to say about the draw: "I thought we played well enough to earn the win tonight but we couldn't catch a break. I was proud of the way our guys fought back and pushed hard to earn the tying goal. We have to find ways to finish our chances but overall I was pleased with our effort."
The Cougars will face Florida College on Tuesday, October 4 at 6:30 p.m. at Glen Oaks Park in Clearwater.
