Cougars Win 1st Region Match 1-0 over Toccoa

(9-17-11) Clearwater Christian College won their opening region match of the season, defeating Toccoa Falls College 1-0 on Seth Dempsey's rocket in the 60th minute.

The Cougars came out strong in the first half, moving the ball well, controlling the run of play, and creating several point blank chances. Forwards Dempsey and Riley Tuininga were able to get in behind the Toccoa backs but were unable to capitalize as the Toccoa keeper came up with several good saves. Toccoa's best chance of the match came near the end of the first half as Eric Bill fired a shot from close range that hit the crossbar.

Clearwater came out determined early in the 2nd half and were rewarded with Dempsey's goal with 30 minutes to go off an assist from Mac Hildebrand. Dempsey received the pass from Hildebrand, took a touch away from the TFC defender, and rifled the ball into the upper 90 from just outside the 18 yard box to score the game winner.

Anthony DeRosse earned the first shutout of the season for the Cougars, making 6 saves. Freshmen defenders Ben Holmes and James Sikes played well in the back for the Cougars as CCC adjusted the lineup because of several injuries.

Coach Whitaker commented after the match, "I'm really excited about the way alot of our young players are coming along. They stepped up in a big spot tonight filling in for several key injuries. We keep focusing on improving every day."

The win against Toccoa was the 6th straight win in the series between the region rivals. Clearwater will play Point University Saturday at Glen Oaks Park at 4 p.m. in another key region matchup.
