Cougars Roll to 4-1 Win Over Crown

(9/2/11) Clearwater Christian College knocked off Crown College (TN) for the first win of the season. Senior Walter Scharf led the Cougars with 2 goals as the Cougars dominated possession to earn the win over the NCCAA Mid-East region opponent.

Freshman Johnathan Moore opened the scoring for the Cougars in the 16th minute, blasting a shot into the upper 90 for his first career goal off an assist from James Sikes. Minutes later, freshman Ben Holmes scored on a nice finish after the ball was knocked down in the Crown penalty box. The Cougars continued to control the run of play throughout the first half and into the 2nd, creating numerous chances but were unable to put the game out of reach.

Crown answered with a free kick goal from Nick Sexton in the 69th minute to cut the lead to 2-1. Clearwater answered with a flurry of chances in the box before Scharf scored off another assist in the 79th minute. Scharf would add the final score of the match minutes later to seal the 4-1 win for the Cougars.

Following the win, Coach Whitaker commented, "This was a solid effort by our young team. We got great contributions from a lot of different players and created a lot of quality scoring opportunities. It's great to get our first win of the season."

The Cougars improve to 1-1 on the season and will next face Saint Leo University (NCAA II) on Saturday night at 7pm.
