Vickie Denny Named Alumnus of the Year
Coach Vickie Denny
Vickie Denny, professor of Exercise and Sport Science and Teacher Education, Chair of the Department of Exercise and Sport Science, and the women’s volleyball coach at Clearwater Christian College, was recently named the Alumnus of the Year at Bob Jones University, her alma mater. Coach Denny graduated from BJU in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science degree in health and physical education. Continuing her education, she received her master’s degree in physical education from the University of Illinois and her doctoral degree in physical education/teacher education from Florida State University. She has 31 years of coaching experience on various levels of competition and has coached at the college level for 27 years, 22 of which have been at CCC.
“Coaching means ministry,” she said. “It is an avenue to work with young people and challenge them to grow physically, socially, mentally, and spiritually. It provides a platform for discipleship. Teaching techniques and tactics of the sport is an opportunity to teach Biblical principles within a sport's context. Seeing the young ladies grow both as players as well as Christian women who love God is the great joy I have had over these many years.”
Taking her own personal walk to the next level is a constant goal for Coach Denny. “Recently the Lord has impressed upon me the importance of living a life of integrity. It is always a challenge to keep the proper balance between my own efforts, while acknowledging the grace I am afforded by Christ to ‘work out my salvation.’ The Bible speaks a lot about finishing strong in the Lord; that is what I want to do. ‘To be steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord,’ forasmuch as I know, my labor will never be in vain if it is in the Lord. By His grace, that is what I want to do.”

Coach Denny is also the acting president of the National Christian College Athletic Association and serves as a contributing writer to the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s (AVCA) journal “Volleyball ACE Power Tips.” Her life verse is Galatians 2:20. She is married to Mr. Lou Denny who assists her with the volleyball team and was the recipient of the Assistant Coach of the Year (2010) award by the NCCAA.
“Looking back over the last 30 years, I see that God has been faithful. He has given me a ministry in teaching and coaching; the two things I love to do.”
Congratulations, Coach Denny!
