Cougars Takes Out Dallas 5-1 to Advance

(11/10/10) Clearwater Christian College defeated Dallas Christian College 5-1 as they opened their defense of their national championship in the opening round of the NCCAA D2 National Soccer Tournament in Kissimmee, Florida. Tyler Spraul scored a hat trick to lead the Cougars, and Juan Robayo contributed a goal and 3 assists.

Clearwater opened the scoring early in the match, scoring in the 8th minute when Drew Custer scored on a rebound following a shot from Robayo. In the 14th minute, the Cougars would add to their lead when Robayo scored on a perfect cross from Walter Scharf. Dallas would get back into the match only minutes later on an own goal that deflected off a Cougar defender and into the goal. Clearwater would come right back as Tyler Spraul scored on a penalty kick after Paul Vanaman was fouled following a great run into the box. The Cougars would tally again in the 34th minute when Tyler Spraul scored on a free kick from 25 yards out to put the Cougars up 4-1 at the half.

The Cougars came out of the half intent on putting the game out of reach. Spraul would score his 3rd goal of the match on a diving header after Robayo freed himself in the corner and sent in a low cross that Spraul would put away for the final goal of the match.

Coach Whitaker had this to say following the match: “We got off to a slow start but then settled in and played very well as a team. It was great to get the early goals and take the pressure off. We’re excited to be moving on to the next round.”

Clearwater came into the tournament as the #1 seed and will play Providence College next in the semifinal match at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday night. Providence advanced to the semifinal round by defeating Philadelphia Biblical University in a penalty kick shootout.
