Cougars Finish With Win
The Lady Cougars finished out their regular season at home on Tuesday night with a solid win over NAIA opponent, Webber International University. The contest was a rematch of the very first match of the season for both teams when Webber won a five set showdown. Prior to tonight's match the three CCC seniors were honored for their contribution to the Clearwater Volleyball Team over their years as students; Danielle Heffernan and Kayla Whiteley for four years and Liz Ennis for her two years of play.
At the beginning of the match, the Clearwater team came out flat and fought from behind for the majority of the first set. Struggling from the service line and unable to hit around the big block of Webber's defense stretched the Cougars who eventually did fight back to tie the set at 21-21. With the lead going back and forth, Webber was able to capitalize on two CCC errors to close out the first set 25-23. During sets 2, 3, and 4 the Clearwater team kept the lead and played aggressive defense against the much bigger and stronger opponent. According to Coach Denny "it was our blocking that really got us back into the match. We started shutting down their big guns, and that helped us out. I am also very pleased how our team fought back after missing 5 serves in the first set. We showed mental toughness playing past those early errors and actually finished the last set without a service error."
Clearwater is now 40-8 as they head into the NCCAA National Tournament next week at the Kissimmee Civic Center. Their first match will be against Multnomah Bible College on Thursday, November 11 at 12:00 p.m. Later in the day they will face off against Grace University.
