Men's Basketball Coach

Mr. Keith Champion

Coach Champion is beginning his 3rd year at the helm of the Cougar men's basketball team and will mark his 40th season overall of basketball coaching. Totaling 21 years in the college coaching ranks, prior to coming to CCC, he coached at Northland International University, Pensacola Christian College, and Pillsbury Baptist Bible College. Last year, his Cougars had an 8-2 region record, tying for first place in the NCCAA's South Region regular season. A graduate of Western Michigan University, he holds 3 coach of the year awards, along with an unprecedented 4 consecutive NIAC league championships while coaching at Pillsbury.

Coach Champion holds a B.S. and a M.A. in Physical Education from WMU and enjoys camping, canoeing, biking, golfing, and being with his family. His favorite verse is Psalm 34:8, "O taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who trusteth in Him." Together with his wife, Judy, Coach Champion has over 30 years of experience in Christian education. They have four sons and two daughters, all grown, and recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary.

In addition to regular coaching, Coach Champion has conducted over 65 basketball camps in 16 states, has written a weekly column for a Minnesota newspaper, has appeared as a speaker at numerous school conventions, churches, chapels, and banquets, has been on several athletic mission trips, and remains active in his local church ministry.

Coach Champion has several goals for his Cougar athletic teams: "To turn out athletes from CCC that have a passion to serve the Lord with the talents He has given them; to have the Cougar athletes be role models on campus, at their churches, and in their home communities; to have athletes play with fervor and enthusiasm and to display these same traits in their Christian walks; and, to have players known for their hard work, self-discipline, and testimony. If we take that approach, the wins and losses will take care of themselves." Above all, Coach Champion desires to make a difference in lives for tomorrow. "If we rest on what we accomplished yesterday, we will not be worth anything for the Lord today. It is what we do today with our lives that will impact what we do in future years."

Coach Champion teaches in the ESS Department and is also the interim athletic director.

Clearwater basketball provides for a great atmosphere to expand your skills, but more importantly, to grow closer to Christ. Coach Champion does a great job with incorporating biblical truths into the game of basketball. more...
