Baseball Season Review
(2010-2011)

The Cougars baseball team posted what is most likely to be the best season in the history of the program. At the helm of the program, Coach Raul Hernandez began to build to program by bringing a lot of baseball knowledge and experience to the table. In just two years, he led the team to the national title game, something the Cougars had not reached since the change of the format of postseason play.

The baseball team finished 2nd in the country, losing in the national championship game to Toccoa Falls College. Not only did they finish strong, but they also had a 16 win season, which is nearly double the total wins from the previous two seasons combined. The team competed all season long and never gave up. At the NCCAA DII College World Series, the Cougars picked up wins versus Manhattan Christian College, Atlanta Christian College (Point University), Ohio Christian College, and Dallas Christian College. It was a remarkable finish to one of the most successful seasons in the program's history. It shows that the team never gave up, keeping their eye on the goal they set since the beginning of the fall season in August.

The team was led by four seniors-Joe Keen (2B), Luke Harding (3B), Ryan Domingos (OF), and Josh Rebandt (RHP). These four had the World Series as their goal since they stepped foot on campus and their leadership throughout the season carried the team to not give up. Joe Keen (2B) was named to the All-Region team, and Luke Harding (3B) received the prestigious Hank Burbridge Award given to one senior in the country that demonstrates Spiritual leadership, academic success, along with great success on the baseball field. He also was named a Scholar-Athlete by the NCCAA.

The Cougars were also led by Junior standout pitcher, Brent Kirkley, who was named to the All American team and also received the NCCAA DII National Pitcher of the Year Award for his success on the mound. Along with Kirkley, Freshman Centerfielder David Edwards received All American accolades as he provided a much needed stable bat in the leadoff spot. He made fantastic plays in the field all year long, including some unforgettable catches at the World Series.

Freshman starting catcher Casey Nunez caught nearly every game behind the plate this year for the Cougars, and he was a consistent bat that the Cougars could rely on all year long. Casey was named to the World Series All Tournament team for his outstanding play at the World Series. He was also named to the Honorable Mention All Region team. One other standout freshman, Isaiah Marsh, was the Cougars closer and he picked up multiple wins at the World Series earning a spot on the World Series All Tournament team as well.

The Cougars baseball team broke many barriers in 2011 that are needed in order to continue to build the program. The team reached many of their goals on and off the field paving the way for more success in all areas in years to come.
