Over and over in Scripture we are admonished to pursue knowledge, understanding, and wisdom. From the Psalmists to the apostle Paul to the most erudite, we are given the command to learn. "Wise as serpents, harmless as doves" is among those admonitions. I believe that, in the words of the secularist writerYeats, "Education isn't filling a pail it's lighting a fire." Though Yeats surely didn't think in terms of equipping the believer to go into society and live a meaningful life, it nonetheless is true that our jobs as Christian educators are to stir the passions of knowledge and holy living in our students' hearts.

We must teach global knowledge from a Biblical perspective. We must use the best resources, for we want the best product in our students. For those in leadership, nothing less than godly examples, unparalleled experience and wisdom, and a servant's heart are all marks of the proper educators.
We make ourselves available to our students not just for making a living, but for right living. Because we bear the name of Christ, our academics and training serve as reference points for those around us to know who we think He is, and what He means to us. No matter what field of study we represent, we who call ourselves Christians must be "approving things that are excellent."
After all, it is we who will one day give account of the lives that were loaned to us.
